So that was the end of the journal idea but the pictures are in order and I think I can piece things together.
So we were up and fed and packed as soon as possible. We had decided yesterday that our goal in coming up this way was to see an iceberg. From everything I had read ice berg alley runs from the arctic, off the northern side of Newfoundland and around the island to the east. Just to our north is the general area where the flow intersects with the island.
We were all in mild disbelief of the way the trip had transpired so far. Actually I shouldnt speak for them right now since Im in a hotal room by myself but I can definately say that I was very happy.
Feeling satisfied we said goodbye to Dildo Run. All of the places we visited deserve more mention than they are going to get because I am running very low on web page space. There are so many pictures of beautifull Twilingate but this view off the cliff at the furthest northern tip of Newfoundland came out the best. |
We made our way back down into town and stopped for a bite to eat as Meredith really wanted some fish and chips. We ended up at a take out where they had a l2lb lobster in the tank. |
The car was still rolling. I havent mentioned much about the gas fumes that were coming through the dash into the vehicle and exhaust that was coming in from the rear vent windows that were open because of the ropes going through them. The car was rolling but the trip was hard on it. In hindsight the seats were comfortable and the steering worked well but I would not say that I would take it again. I dont think that it was healthy to take it in the first place but it made it. Brakes were iffy to begin with. The suspension was not what I would call effective at all. But I definately liked the looks of it. Meredith deserves better but I felt right at home in Glens world. Meredith drives a tight little Mazda and it looks good on her. Luckily for me she is adaptable.

So we heard there was an iceberg heading around Merrits cove. I think that the Twilingate area was the most scenic we had seen throughout the whole trip. We drove down every road we could find that might lead to the coast in hopes of catching a glimpse of a big chunk of ice. Luckily for us, all roads around this area lead to classic Newfoundland landscapes. |
The fog was rolling in which made for some nice views in the immediate area, but it also made it hard to see icebergs. We didnt see an iceberg on our first trip to Merrits Cove so we pressed on. |
We ran across these girls who were selling lemonade and cookies so we stopped in for a taste. |
The end of one road led us to a path that led to a lookout. It was nice to get out of the car as much of possible to stretch the legs and this little trot was an expecially nice one. We ran into others who were chasing the bergs as well so we could cross reference our travels and narrow down our options. |
At the end of the trail there was a large platform constructed at the top of the hill where you could take in the view. |
Again, it was expecially nice to have Meredith along. We will have a hard time beating this trip for quite a while. I hope we do manage someday cause itll have to be a heck of a trip to outdo this one. |
I am really glad that Meredith suggested that she take a picture of Glen and I. I wish I had one like it with each of my friends. |
Had to get one in with the flag :) |
When you did step off the walkways the ground was covered with a natural carpet. |
It is too bad that when I resize the pictures they loose most of the clarity that the original has. There are many of these pictures that are crystal clear in the original and although the resized version is quite dissapointing, theres no way around it given the 5meg limit on this personal site. |
We returned to Merrits Cove to see if the fog had lifted any. It had but we still had no view of an iceberg and decided to leave the car for a bit and wander around. It took a bit of scrambling up and around rocks to get out onto this plateau. No iceberg but still well worth the trip. |
Glen on the carpet. We had a really nice long hike around this stuff. I am not much of a runner any more but I couldnt help skipping around here a little ahead of everyone else. |
We ran into a couple who was from Halifax. They heard that there was an iceberg hung up on the rocks in this area. I ran way up ahead and caught this confirmation glimpse. I excitedly signaled to the rest that I found it! And they headed up to leisure around the cliffs and enjoy the view. |
I hope Glen got enough time to himself, I dont think it was an issue though. We were 3, not 2 and 1. |
I suppose it is hard to tell how big the berg is from pictures. It was quite a ways away, so it was good size. We were pretty happy to have found one. We blew our travel plans for the day chasing this thing around all morning, but it couldnt have worked out any better. |
Rocks and ice and sunshine and us, no puffins in sight, but we had found pretty much everything we had come for :) |
The last decent through the rocks to shore produced a nice vantage point where we admired these fishing sheds which were cribbed up out in the water. |
Beautifull spot out here. |
Our room was wicked. For some reason I thought I talked about it already so I wont bother here. |
